The Significance of the day of Ashura

About the Event

When the Prophet (ﷺ) arrived at Medina, the Jews were observing the fast on 'Ashura' (10th of Muharram) and they said, "This is the day when Moses became victorious over Pharaoh," On that, the Prophet (ﷺ) said to his companions, "You (Muslims) have more right to celebrate Moses' victory than they have, so observe the fast on this day."   -Narrated Ibn `Abbas:

Ashura marks the 10th day of the Islamic month, Muharram. This day in which Prophet Musa (Moses) AS defeated the tyrant Firaun (Pharaoh).

Prophet Muhammad (saw) said:

“If I live until next year, I will fast the ninth day (of Muharram) too.” -but by the time the following year came, he had passed away.

It is advisable but not mandatory to fast om the 10th of Muharram. This fast will (insha'Allah) expiate your sins from the previous year.
